About Lacy Woods Nature Preserve

Lacy Woods Nature Preserve is a 130-acre protected natural area located near Oxford, Ohio. It features a well-preserved forest ecosystem primarily composed of mature oak, maple, and hickory trees, along with a variety of native understory plants. The preserve lies within the glaciated Allegheny Plateau region, which offers gently rolling hills and small creeks that contribute to a diverse habitat supporting local wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous songbird species. Established in 1998, the preserve serves both conservation and education purposes, managed by the Little Miami Conservancy to protect the area’s ecological integrity. Visitors can enjoy several hiking trails winding through the hardwood forest that showcase seasonal wildflower blooms and fall foliage. Birdwatchers especially appreciate the preserve for spotting warblers and woodpeckers throughout the year. Lacy Woods is also valued for its role in protecting local amphibians and invertebrates typical of eastern Ohio’s woodlands. While it lacks developed campgrounds and large visitor centers, the preserve offers a peaceful escape from urban environments with straightforward access from Oxford. Interpretive signs along the trails provide information about the local flora, fauna, and natural history, making it an excellent outdoor classroom for schools and naturalists. Overall, Lacy Woods Nature Preserve draws visitors interested in low-impact recreation such as hiking, wildlife observation, and nature photography, all within a quiet, well-maintained forest setting.
